First and Only a Long Time Ago

On this cold, cloudy day on 6 May 1976, I sank this unusual 159 yard shot with a nine iron. The green sloped severely from back to front. My shot hit the front left of the hard green and rolled out in a wide arc about 30 feet to the center pin position, from the side. This was the first hole in one at the Ft Riley Officers Club course since before the start of the build up for the Viet Nam war, and it was the last hole in one before they closed the course about eight years later. The Officers Golf Club actually bought the house for several hours as this was the first in quite a while. Naturally, the shot was registered with Titleist as I hit a Tour balata ball, but I was a little embarrassed to display the ball as it had pretty good "scrub" on the side. Sorry, no photo from those days. I was too poor to own a Polaroid, and my guess is, today's photographing smart phones weren't even a dream in someone's mind, yet.
