First Ace and More

On October 10, 2019, I was playing with one of my regular foursomes. I was even par when we came to the 140-yard 10th hole. I flushed a 7-iron (Titleist AP-2). The ball (Pro v1) drew in toward the pin, bounced once, rolled toward the hole, then stopped with a lurch right in front of the flag. At that distance and angle, we couldn't tell how far the ball was from the hole, but we assumed I would surely have a tap-in birdie. Then I mentioned that I had been playing golf for 63 years (since I was 7) and had never scored a hole-in-one. "Too bad," we all agreed. Then we jumped in our carts and took off for the green. Once we arrived, we found that the ball hadn't "lurched." It had dropped part way into the hole and then gotten lodged against the leaning pin. When I straightened the pin, the ball dropped the rest of the way down. Hole-in-one! I was so flustered that I bogeyed the next two holes before I got my game back on track. When I reached the 18th green, I was still even par and had a 12-footer for birdie, which I drained for a 1-under par 70. So I reached three milestones in one round: First ace. First time to shoot my age. First time to break par at the Club at Ironwood in the Shenandoah Valley.
