I was playing a brand new course in French Camp California that really had some great holes on it. Their signature hole was #8 par 3 over water and it had a nice fountain just off to the left. A really pretty hole to play. the 7th green was on the other side of the water just to the right of our tee box but much closer to number 8's green than we were on the tee. When I hit my shot i knew it was good, truth is all i wanted to do was to clear the water and there was a group of 4 on the 7 green watching us hit. So when my ball hit and just rolled about 10 feet right into the cup they let out a big cheer as did we. 8 people saw that shot and that really made me feel good. Unfortunately none of my buddies were playing with me that day . I just drove to the new course that had only been open for 4 months and got on the singles list. When i went into the clubhouse to report it to the pro , i asked, how many aces have been made on this course so far? Steve Videtta the head propro looked at me and said, we havent had one yet, we just opened up. I said, you mean i got the first one ever on this course. Now im really excited . And he says you made one to day and yes sir i did. He asked me what hole i aced and i said #8, all proud as you can imagine. And Steve said, thats our signature hole, well congratulations. I naturally thanked him and asked can i turn this in for a bag tag and of course he said yes. Well he said can i buy you a beer for that shot and i had to turn him down because i had a bout a 30 minute drive home and i dont like to drink and drive even if its just one beer. I said how about a soda and he said to me, take you pick anything you want. Well we started to chat about how long the course had been open and he said we didnt expect an ace so soon, we thought maybe 20,000 rounds or so before we would get one. Well to i asked him if by chance they had any assistant positions open because i wanted to go into the PGA program and work as a head pro. He didnt have one open but he did have a marshals job open and he hired me for that. So with one shot, not only do i do something that not many people get to do, Get the very first ace on a course but i also got a job and that allowed me to work on my game, free golf and all the practice time i wanted after work. A trucker hit me on the freeway a few months later coming home from a round of golf and ended my dreams of becoming a pga professional. No way could i take and pass the PAT . Before shooting 77 -78 for a target score of 155 for the PAT would have been easy as i was a 3.2 at the time but when that guy hit me it tore up my back good. Of course the ball was a trusty Titleist DT wound 90 So that is one of my hole in one stories , the other 2 that i have are not nearly as interesting as this one.
