I had made an ace in 3 consecutive years...1988,89,90. I figured that at age 61, I had had my fair share of catching lightning in a bottle. All day, I was thinking about my father ( Henry) who passed exactly 6 years ago on August 16, 2013. Well, today at Bethpage Green, all hell broke loose. We had a very long wait on the 3rd hole tee box. The hole was backed up with 2 groups, and the hole was playing up hill, in to a breeze. About 140 yards. I chose a 6 iron simply becauseI figured I could clear the sand trap in front, and the pin was up. I hit it very smooth....and chirped “It’s in the hole”... a very poor Bill Murray imitation. We walk up the hill, and one ball is on the green. Rich Karras, a life long friend hit a good ball, on the green, but 20 feet right of the pin. I look short, but nada. I take 3 or 4 paces and peer at the bottom of the hole. I mark my ball with a blue line, and 2 sets of double slashes. There it was, sitting at the bottom of the hole...no mistake-my Titleist Pro V1. My best Bronx cheer followed by an impromptu photo op and the high fives are coming from everyone. The group behind us witnessed it, and one of the guys said that my shot never left the flag. What a thrill. My buy at the Bethpage patio watering hole....money well spent.
