I checked the USGA website and it says that the 735's in chrome conform to all the current rules, but the stainless version has yet to be approved because they haven't done enough testing.

Don't both versions use the same grooves? Why would one conform and the other not?

I'm curious because I have the stainless version and would like to start playing competitively. Not sure how many tournaments I'll enter that are concerned with that much detail, but I'd like to know in case it comes up.

I have the 735.CM Stainless and loved them for many years.  Still have them in my office on backup status.  Not sure about the grooves and just moved to the AP2's last year so unsure of the conforming specs or not.  Only competition I have experience with is Golf Channel Amateur tour and pretty sure they didn't even check your club count in your bag.  So ya I doubt they would check but golf is a game of honor and integrity so good that you are making a conscious effort.  Best of Luck!!

Yeah, seems odd that one is listed as conforming and the other isn't. I wasn't sure how big a deal it would be on the amateur level, but thought I should try to gather as much information as I could on the subject. I love these irons and got a really great deal on eBay for them so they're staying in the bag until I get booted from a tournament for using them. lol.

Here's a screenshot from the USGA website (FSS = Forged Stainless Steel):

  6. Richard - I was just wondering if you ever got an answer to your question. I have the stainless 735.cm irons. They don't have the hammer and anvil logo. They look identical to the chrome version except that they're stainless. I agree with you that the USGA's site is confusing. It doesn't make a distinction between the FSS version and the stainless version. I assume there is some difference because of the different logo. Please let me know if you found out anything or if someone from Titleist can answer this question. Thank you!
  7. I just got an email from Titleist confirming that both the chrome and stainless steel versions of the 735.cm irons conform to the current groove rules. According to Titleist, the 735.cm FSS irons that are listed on the USGA club database were prototype versions that never made it to full production. They are different than the consumer models. I hope this helps.
