    Hi,

I'm just curious to hear what keeps everyone motivated to keep getting better at the game of golf. For me, I like the challenges that the game poses on every shot. I can shoot a great round and still be so hungry to drop my score even lower that I'm at the putting green after my round or at the range the very next day and the same can be said when I shoot a bad round. I want to conquer every type of shot and become as well rounded of a player that I can. What keeps you motivated to get better?

For me, it's seeing my game improve just that little bit that keeps me coming back for more. I used to be a total hack that just played with buddies a few times a year, and never really had the desire to be good. Then I got older (30) and realized this really was a "thinking man's game" and can be really rewarding. As I improved, it was the little things, like the new feeling of making perfect contact on your 5 iron, experiencing tempo the first time, getting fitted for a proper driver and seeing the results, and my personal favorite- hearing someone refer to you as a "good golfer". (True or not, it still makes you feel like a rockstar).

At the wonderful age of 70, being retired, living along the coast of South Carolina where lots of golf is readily available the year round, getting up every morning, having good health and being able to play this wonderful game are a number of wonderful motivators. The simple but important things in life make this game fun and golf should be fun. I too like challenges, but at this point I like to think that "I'm not over the hill, I'm just on the back nine" and having the best time of my life. It keeps me coming back and I am probably playing the best consistent golf of my life. Those wonderful Titleist clubs I have in my bag and my V ball help a lot. =)

Chuck Z- I just noticed the embroidery on your bag. Cheers and Thank You Sir; though I don't know the specifics behind it's specific meaning to you specifically, I have tremendous respect for the sacrifices our servicemen and servicewomen have made.

I like that there is always improvement to be made. Also, getting outside and playing makes it worth while as well. No course is the same so trying each course and seeing various challenges on every hole is exciting for me.

My ex-husband once told me, "There's always that one shot that's going to bring you back," and that has been true for me. Sometimes it's that perfect drive that sails down the middle of the fairway. Sometimes it's the 18 foot putt that you sink on the first try. Something deep within you says that with more practice, you can make that shot every time. It's what has me out at the driving range on my lunch break and, like you, going straight to the putting green after my round to practice chipping and putting.

I would like to echo what Chuck Z said only I am in Arkansas where you can play year round with the exception of a few cold days. I try to practice on shots that hurt my score from my last round or two. With that said I like to practice every facet of the game and then see if I can take it to the course.

My renewed motivation for getting my game back, after several years of hardly playing, is just my renewed love for the game! My handicap way back when was as low as 3. I am recently retired. I may not get my handicap down to that again but it won't be for lack of trying!

I have some very personal motivation, which is the reason, I actually re-started playing again, and hopefully after I will continue to keep playing.
  13. I love the grind of getting better. Try to practice as much as possible. See what I can do on the course. Always watching videos, trying to learn something new! Plus, playing with my friends and family is a blast. A lot of trash talk!

Great post Mitchk2, I have been lucky enough to work at a course for the past 21 years. It's a county course, used to be private. I have seen all types. 5 days a week I watch, 2 days a week I play. It's not bad. Funny how the Titleist golfers always stand out!
    Play well,

It's a quest to return to my younger form! The problem is I have nowhere near the time required to get there. So, I slave away with what I have, occasionally seeing glimpses of what used to be!.......

Realizing potential. I use Game Golf and looking through their Strokes Gained analysis I can see that I have the potential to play much better golf than my handicap indicates. It drives me to practice more often and more deliberately to lower my scores and handicap.
  23. I am a freshman golfer with a 6 handicap. I am in the process of playing on my first high school team, and I have really been struggling. I am one of the better golfers on my team, but I haven't qualified for tournaments because 12 handicappers are smoking me. I dream to be a pro golfer, and seeing myself get beat by players that I am better than hurts. Through this I have found the motivation to keep going. It is the dream that keeps me on the grind even when things aren't going my way. The struggle is good, and I've actually enjoyed this hardship because I know it will make me better. It is that hardship that makes me work harder, and get stronger. I am motivated by the love of the game. It has been this motivation that has finally earned me a spot on my high school team

My father always said, "if something is worth doing, it's worth doing right". he loved the game. He is gone but in his honor I strive to be better. Love you Dad, doing my best to be like you.
