Looking for New Irons!

    Hey all,

    I've been lurking on Team Titleist for a while now and think it's a great community! This is my first post so take it easy on me!

    So I started golfing for as long as I can remember. Most of the time I would hit the range with my Dad on weekends and use his Max-fli forged cavity backs (which are gems btw). For my 16th birthday he bought me a set of 714 cb's that we could both use when we went. I love them and almost wore it as a badge of honor that I honed my game with "players irons" lol. As I began to actually play, I struggled with my iron game at first but eventually turned it into the strongest part of my game. I somehow whittled my hc down to a 9 and now I'm ready to take my game to the next level. I started tracking my fw's hit, GIR's, putts etc. and now I'm coming to terms with how much missed GIRs are affecting my score. That being said I'm ready to swallow my pride and finally get some more forgiving irons, especially 5-3. Any advice on what to look for? I'm happy with my distances; I carry my 7 iron around 160 but a little more oomf wouldn't hurt. I'm more so looking for an iron that's less "lively" off the face per se. My ball striking could obviously get better but I just want something that's less susceptible to the occasional hook/slice on approaches.

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    I would look for a fitting event in your area. I am in my sixties I still play forged irons. For me they give me consistency and yardages I can rely on.

    AP2's sound like where you want to be looking. They have the feel of blades but with more forgiveness.

    Certainly book in for a fitting though to try all the options.

    Hi Nick,

    I like you also played with 'Players irons' whilst growing up, although I hit them well I always knew I could do better.
    I now have the Titleist AP2 714. Have you considered these? They look great at address and feel sweet when you hit them.

    Most of the pros seem to be moving to cavity backs now rather than blades. Players like Poulter and Speith use them

    The majority on this site will suggest that you go for a fitting by a certified Titleist fitter. They will have all the different heads and shafts that Titleist offers and will be able to dial in what works best for you.

    You really need to find a professional fitter that you can trust. A big box retailer can sell you a set of 3-P off the rack, but you'll likely be disappointed. A good fitter can also work with you on refining what can be done with a 7 iron for a realistic baseline distance. Then work with you if you should get a mixed set for the 3-5 clubs. You may be able to keep the CBs for 7-P and look at AP3/AP2 for the longer clubs and possibly look at a hybrid or T-MB for a 3 iron. Just why you need a fitter - the possibilities are almost endless. Best options are a Titleist Thursday or a Premier fitting center if you can find one within a reasonable distance (and I'd drive up to 2-2.5 hours if I needed to).

    Nick, you have to see a certified Titleist fitter. Its hard for any of us and there a PGA pros on this site to tell you what club to get without seeing your swing and knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Don't self fit or you'll end up wasting money and hating your clubs... CONFIDENCE in your clubs and fitter are KEY..

    First of all, welcome to Team Titleist, the best blog in golf. I feel that the best thing that you could do is go to a Titleist Thursday or find a certified Titleist fitter near you, which can be done on this site. The best, depending on where you live, would be going to Manchester Lane or Oceanside, CA. Man, if I still lived in NY I'd take a ride to Manchester for sure.     Go see a Titleist fitter. They are available on demo days as well as Titleist Thursdays when that program kicks back in and there is no charge for the fitting. Do yourself a favor and get a set designed just for you. Cheers, Chuck......

    Welcome to the Team and your first post. Considering your last sentence, no irons will eliminate occasional hooks and slices. If you need more "oomph" but want an iron less lively, which confuses me, I think you may need to get a professional fitting. You might even try a combo set. Good Luck and keep us posted on your choices.

    Nick welcome to the forum! Like you I learned to play on “players irons”. I grew up with muscle backs, which I have played my whole life until last year when I switched to the AP2 for my 5-9 irons. I love the setup and look at address it reminds me of my old blades, but with way more forgiveness and slight increase in distance. What I love about them is the forged face gives you instant feedback and the ability to shape the ball, with more confidence the shot won’t be unplayable when you catch one off center. Catching one pure off the face reminds me of my old blades. I also recently switched to the T-MB 4 iron, which is an awesome option for the long irons. Keep us posted on what you decide to do and how it all works out!

    Hey All! Thanks for all the great feedback! I've booked my appointment for a Titleist Fitting Day at my local PGA superstore and I'm really looking forward to it! I'll post an update after I get some new sticks in my bag.

    Welcome to the TT community. It's really a great place to get some valuable information.
    As for your fitting, I'm with Don O. Go to a professional fitter! That will get you on track to the proper clubs.

    Hi. Following the original poster and felt I should comment. I was in the same boat needing new irons and had a fitting. I plumped for the CB 718's and I'll explain why. FEEL!!! Pure and simply the best feel I've ever had from a club (and ive spent months looking). The fitting showed higher ball apex than i had before too which is exactly what I have needed. I liked the AP2 (great contact, low flight) and the MB's (high flight, loss of distance) during the fitting but had that lightning bolt hit me with the CB's. Everyone's different and will look for different aspects but I would recommend the CB's everytime.

    Hey All! Sorry for the late update but I have my new irons and they're BEAUTIFUL. The fitting was incredible! I went into it with an open mind and I'm really happy with the end result. So I was mostly hitting ap2's and ap3's (both felt amazing) and wound up with the 2's. My dispersion was slightly tighter with the 2's and I just loved the feel of them through and through. I'm still using Project X Steel 6.0 shafts but with 1 degree higher lie and two additional grip wraps. I'd never even thought about how those two things could affect my game. The attention to detail during my fitting practically made me feel like I was on tour! I highly recommend getting fitted even if you're not in the market for new clubs just off the fact that those same minor adjustments will help your game. The only drawback is now I want to get the rest of my bag fitted. Fingers-crossed I have a good summer looping and can get my hands on some Voke's!
