- Nobody measures clubs this way. It sound's like their close.
Remember all companies have tolerances for error. For standard off the rack clubs, those tolerances are huge. For example an iron can be up to like 2 degrees off spec... There's only 3-4 degrees between them. Worst case you could have a standard 4i (24) at 26 and the 5 iron (27) at 25 degrees and they'd still pass spec and your 5 iron would be going farther than your 4 iron...

Check out the USGA diagram and method of measuring a golf club. It looks to me like like they include the grip and go to the bottom of the hosel. Their wording gets very confusing. I think I saw a wall hanging at a PGA Tour Superstore with an outline of a club and it gives them a consistent measurement.

Received this from Titleist December 2017:

The finished length of recent Titleist clubs would be the listed measurement plus the butt cap which varies by approximately 1/8-1/4". ie a 45" driver would be 45" plus the butt cap so anywhere between 45 1/8" to 45 1/4".

I believe this applied today and most OEM club companies measure their clubs similarly.

The published length of Titleist clubs are measured as Barry suggests with the exception the length is measured without a grip so your measurement should be greater than the published length by 1/8" to 1/4 " - the length the grip cap varies between grip manufacturers. I lean a 48" ruler against a wall and with the ruler and club at the proper lie angle I measure the length to the top of grip and deduct as required.

To measure the playing length, lean the club against a wall at the specified lie angle and measure in line with the shaft from the end of the grip to the floor.
