I’m a 7 handicap high school golfer, I’m at the point in my game where I can get around a golf course from the back and play decent golf. But I feel like speed is holding me back, I don’t hit the ball anywhere. The last practice session on a launch monitor told me my driver averaged about 145-150 mph ball speed and mid to upper 90s mph club head speed (Some in the low 100s), with an average carry of 210 yards and with average total of 244. I feel like if I could pick up some speed I would be able to score better especially some of the longer courses in my area. Does anyone have any advice on how to get faster with the driver? Or is an efficiency issue? Thanks, Boone.

RE: Speed

Hi, Boone. Great question! Just about all of us would love to add some distance and advanced golf analytics clearly shows that there's a strong correlation between driving distance and better scoring.

There are several factors that go into driving the ball farther, including increased clubhead speed, consistency of center-face contact, optimizing launch conditions, getting properly fit for a golf ball and club equipment, etc. - but a great place to start you search for increasing your distance potential is to evaluate where you are currently. And there is no better resource for that than TPI (https://www.mytpi.com).

At the Titleist Performance Center itself or through its network of certified golf, fitness and medical experts, you will learn about the Body Swing Connection and how to improve the efficiency of your golf swing to get the most out of what you can do physically as an individual. From there, you can develop a plan and access resources to help you reach your goals for improvement. Best of luck and thanks for supporting Titleist!

RE: Range Session Routine

don't simply rake ball after ball after ball. take time to focus on your target, use alignment sticks and practice with a purpose. Ive coached HS golf for 15 years. I respect your honesty and wish you the best. I think its impressive your a 7 handicap. No matter what age we are, we all want some more speed!

If youre looking for speed its really gonna be a combination of things. It will depend on your physical strength and stature for sure, so as you grow youll gain strength and speed. As a golfer, I imagine you dont want to just wait to "grow" - so you can get into some physical fitness and flexibility to help you there.

Its also going to be dependent on equipment, which i know not every HS kid has acces to a lot of the technology and or clubs but you obviously have some measuring device to get the ball speed - you can look around and see which type of ball is fastest for you, mixed in with being in the right shaft and driver head - but again i know thats not always possible.

Then you can find things like over speed training with speed sitx or the stack, among others. Where you can follow a program and gain clubhead speed through that. The idea is to train your body to swing fast, but you want to make sure you can keep the ball in play too!

And of course, whats definitely want to seek out coaching, whether its your HS coach or a PGA professional. Getting a lesson and fininding ways in your set up and swing to gain some speed. Good luck!

RE: Speed

Boone, are you working with an instructor? That would be my first suggestion. If you don't have an instructor, it's time to look for one, and only one. That means you should do some interviews of teachers in your area. PGA pros are a good start but not the only source of instruction. Ask around to get some leads, then conduct your own interviews. Explain to potential instructors what your goals are and what help you desire. Listen to their answers, then select one that seems to fit their experiences to achieving your goals. If you find that the first lesson doesn't make sense, even after asking some questions and practicing, then maybe that isn't the right instructor for you.

Do not be alarmed if your first lesson results in a step or two backward. To go forward, one often has to unlearn an old habit, and assimilating something new will take some time. Very few people have instant lesson gratification.

On this site, there are instructional videos as well as some information on the TPI programs. They can also be helpful (or, better yet, find a TPI-certified instructor!).

Very few high-level golfers are purely self-taught. Don't be afraid of seeking advice, but don't get advice from more than one person as it will likely be confusing and perhaps contradictory.

You'll know when you and an instructor 'click'. Good fortune achieving your goals!

RE: Putting tips

dont putt to hard when you are close to the hole

RE: Practice vs Playing

I practice in my garage about 2-3 times per week. Half the battle is putting in the hard work on the range and the course to get your game to the level that you are comfortable with. The other 1/2 is mental and that affects both pros and amateurs alike. I too had a similar experience getting to the tee and forgetting how to play golf. I try to win the mental game by playing 1 shot at a time. It is so easy to get caught up in a bad thought or play a bad hole and let it destroy a good game. Sounds like you have the game locked down, just play more relaxed and accept that everyone will have a bad hole once in a while. Keep following your dreams and keep it in the fairway!

[/quote]
Your photo is upside down and its funny because it's kind of how I feel the world seems when im actually playing competitively even with friends. Plus the cart girl is still going to flirt with you after you top your driver 75 yards... so YOLO!

RE: Mental Aspect of the Game

I have though about wearing shooters ear plugs to just make everything go away. Some are advertised referred to as Portable A/C. Plug it into the USB driver in the golf cart. Fill it up with cold water/ice, the fan blows cool air in the direction you need. Also need a bungee cord to attach it to the windshield. Best I have found for this high eat index in the lowcountry of S Carolina. Glad I saw this post, time to get it ready. Charleston being on the ocean, that heat index does get well over a hundred in the dreaded months of July and August. Nothing like Memphis though. After living there for ten years this was a welcome relief, if there is such a thing in the South. Not enough to move. Go vols.

Golf Cart Fans

I see a lot of people using the Ryobi fans here in Alabama. with a couple bungee cords they rest them on the windshield (folded down) and they work very well. I am curious if anyone has other recommendations for fans possibly with a built in cooling element. Also, looking for recommendations for attaching to the cart in the most convenient way. Summer is upon us and it gets brutal. Heat is part of it and always will be, but we have 100+ days with humidity down here and I am looking for a little relief. Thanks!

RE: Range Session Routine

go to the range when it is nice weather

RE: Mats vs grass

While no mat gives equal feedback to turf., putting an outdoor range mat on concrete is it’s own problem Set on a gravel base, the mat isn’t as hard on ball strikes. It often makes me take bigger divots/hit the ball far out on the course. I have taken the approach to not even warm up before a round at the range in order to play better. Anyone else taking this approach?
