I have trouble with the 58/08 wedge and find the 52/12 easier in some bunkers

Hi Dan,

Wedge hound here... the 54-10 has a fuller sole (wider) towards the toe (with some heel relief) so it will be more effective out of softer sand than let's say the M grind, which has relief on both the toe and heel (reducing bounce). I would tend to want to use the 54-10 out of softer sand than let' say the 58-08. I'd probably use the 58-08 as a go to wedge around the green and in firmer sand.

I'd also review your bunker set up -- opening up the 58 in the sand, putting the handle slightly backwards or at least neutral, taking a butterfly grip (see Pete Cowan on youtube), positioning the ball off your lead big toe, and keeping the loft during the swing ( do not point you right palm towards the ground when you are parallel to the ground in the downswing), and no handle dragging (no lag) will help you use all of the bounce on that club.

Most of the time, it's the setup that is the issue, not the bounce. As you know, opening up slightly will add to the bounce, but even if you set up correctly, if you snatch the club on the downswing and take loft "off", you are dead in the bunker.

Thanks for the responses guys. When you say 54.10 do you mean in the s grind? Are you sure there's more bounce in that club than the 54.10m grind? That contradicts the Vokey selection guide. One would think a larger flange would add bounce though.

Hi Dan I had the same club and it does not have enough bounce. Should be 14*.This is why I play X forged wedges.,

Your local pro shop or off course store usually can fix you up. You should find someone with experience changing lies and lofts. I just order them with all the specs I want and my pro shop has Titleist set it up for me.

I typically flatten the lie on my wedges slightly relative to my irons.

Ok I'm a bit of a bonehead. All you have to do is look at the lofts first and then make your way across in the web selection guide.

I love the 58.08 out of firm to medium sand. I don't open it at all and get a nice result.

I got some good practice in with the 58.08 last night and it's quite good out of the bunker I was working out of. I'd say the sand was medium. The club also worked quite well on tight lies for short pitches. Great combo to have in the bag!

The 54.14 will have too much bounce, so would the next suggestion be the M in 54.10?

Ok thanks for the advice. That may have too much bounce though....strange the only 12 bounce option from Vokey is in a 52.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the post.

The 54.10 (S) is still considered a mid-bounce option, it just has lower effective bounce than the 54.14 and 54.10 (M). Because of this, it's position on the chart is to the left. This does not mean it has less effective bounce Vs. the 58.08 (M).

If you are looking for a 54 that could be used in softer and heavier bunkers, I would suggest trying the 54.14 (F). The higher effective bounce and full sole design will be more ideal from these conditions.

It is always best to try the clubs first, but hopefully this gives you some direction.
