  1. I just recently upgraded from a set of AP1 714 irons to a set of AP1 718 irons. The 718's came 4-PW, with a 48 degree GW. I would like to complete the set with the 53 degree. (I had the 52 in the 714s). However I'm wondering if I should go with the 718 53 degree wedge or get a Vokey SM7 that I have had my eye on. Is there much difference? I'm a 18 handicap. The Vokey I'm looking at is a 54 degree.

Also, somewhat off topic In the event I go with the 718 53 degree wedge, I have a chance to get a great deal on one but it's a graphite shaft and my set is steel shaft. At my skill level would there be a big difference there?

Depends on how often you use that club for full swings versus partial/bunker shots. People tend to use Vokey's when the majority of shots are not full shots. If you use the 53 in bunkers, you probably don't want graphite if your irons are metal. My personal taste is to use metal shafts in wedges for feel and control.
  3. Go with Vokey if it will be your primary touch/feel/bunker/around the green shots etc. If you go with the 53* ap1 then add a 58* Vokey for the touch shots- however i would personally not opt for graphite if the rest of my clubs were steel.

I'll take a different approach: Purchase the wedge with the graphite shaft and then have your irons re-shafted to the same graphite. It all matches and think of the wear and tear you'll be saving on your wrists and elbows!
    (wink, wink)
