7 Wood - GT1 vs GT2

  1. Hi all,

Is a GT1 7 wood REALLY going to balloon/go too high if I put in an 8x shaft and move the heavier head weight to the front instead of playing GT2? And/or even if I lower loft to 20.25* from 21*?

I just do not like the GT2 7w size/shape at all. The 1 looks amazing behind the ball and is insanely effortless. I swung the GT1 and it was so nice and easy. It just wasn’t with the exact shaft I'd be playing and I didn’t see launch monitor numbers, only carry.

Going off of visuals and my swings with the GT1, I picked up a new in wrapper GT1 21* head recently for a really good price. Before the "best to go get fit" recommendations, I already tried this and there aren't any fitters near me that have an 8x shaft at 7 wood length to go get fit for this. When I swung the GT1, it was with a Tour AD UB 7x which is what I play in 3 wood, I bought a Tour AD UB 8x for the GT1 and am waiting for it to arrive.

Just wanted to get some second opinions

Impossible for anyone to guess what a specific club will do with your specific swing. Sounds like you've already purchased it, so now time to find out in real world.

Good luck with your choice. Sorry you do not have access to a fitter. I have a combination of GT and TSRs. GT2D (10.75*), GT2F (14.25*), TSR1F (17*), TSR1H (20*), GT3H (23*). At 79 my longest iron is a six iron (T350s) and this set up works rather well for me. Work closely with my fitters in community. My clubs are regular shafts, driver is 55gm, fairways 65 and hybrids 75.

All else being equal (AoA, dynamic launch angle, swing speed, consistency, etc.) The 8x shaft should lower the launch angle compared to the 7x shaft. That said if your delivery creates excessive spin, you may still balloon. In theory the heavier weight forward and the heavier shaft should lower overall flight relative to the 7x. Both the GT2 and the GT1 are great, if you prefer the GT1 you will be just fine.

As a high handicapper, I just bought the GT1 7-wood. I can’t wait to try it on Wednesday. It’s my first 7-wood. If there are any videos explaining the different adjustments, I’d love to see them.
