    Anthony,

Depends on what scores will make the team and what your handicap is. When I played HS golf I concentrated a lot on short game and my long game. The best way is to know your weaknesses and track how you play. For example, if your hitting 30% of fairways and averaging less than 1.5 putts/hole then work on driving and fairway woods. Short game is always a good idea. I spent more than half my time on or around putting greens until I got my up and down percentage above 80%.

If possible, tracking your stats at the home course that your team plays will put you at an advantage.

    Hope this helps.

Just keep practicing. Also consider getting lessons now while it's still early. Work a lot on short game especially putting. Playing weekly will help a lot, with range sessions during the week. When at home, you can work on mechanics and movements. Make some practice swing without clubs focusing on swing techniques. Also work on flexibility and balance. Good luck.

It's not easy to get better during the off-season, especially in the Northeast, but as long as there isn't snow on the ground, you can always work on your game outside, and even on snow days, you can always putt on a mat in the basement!

Spend most of your practice time on your short game, your putting and chipping.  This is where you can make the biggest improvement, score-wise.  Practice long lag putts first, learning to control your distance.  Then practice 6-8 footers, leaving yourself no more than a tap in (right, left or long, never short!) each time.  Finally, practice making 3 footers to a tee, or to a dime laid on the practice green.  Practicing with the smaller target makes the hole seem huge when you actually stand over a 3 footer that matters.

When hitting your driver, don't be as concerned with hitting it -far- as with hitting it where you want to, consistently.  You can always add distance once you have a consistent drive.  Don't wear yourself out hitting the ball as hard as you can over and over.  Hit more precision 7 irons and 6 irons at the range, focusing on -distance- control, figuring out how far you hit each club, and being able to repeatedly hit that number.  Don't forget to hit half- and three-quarter shots to the front flags, too, to chart how far you hit your wedges with each swing.

Your coach will be looking for kids who are consistent, with trustworthy short games.  You don't have to make a lot of birdies, just fewer doubles.  Focus on making pars and bogeys, and NOT having those blow-up holes.  Golf isn't a game of 'perfect', so being able to minimize your mistakes is the key.

I have to bring five of my own coins. That's great advice! Working on your short game and putting can definitely make a big difference in your score. And focusing on hitting your driver consistently rather than just for distance is a smart approach. It's also important to practice with different clubs to learn their distances and be able to hit shots of varying lengths with accuracy. And as you mentioned, minimizing mistakes is crucial in golf, so focusing on making pars and avoiding blow-up holes is key. Keep up the good work and happy practicing! By the way I tried to make my school golf and I didn't succeed anything, because the school management decided that this is a bad idea, besides I managed to make after this example phdessay.com/.../ a failure writing which is about golf, instead I got very funny and interesting this, moreover with this idea I went to college and I have for the entrance exam I prepared this writing and the faculty management decided that it is really funny and now I am the manager at the faculty golf, I run various competitions and games.
  6. Practice with a purpose

    Good preperation.

1 Play the courses your school will be playing the matches on.

2 Keep notes on each of the holes with notes on yardage, tee shot landing areas.

3 Take a few putts from differennt areas on the green also.

    Good Luck Anthony !!!!

This post is eight years old. I would be surprised if the question is still valid and hopefully this kid is not still in High School. Again, I would love to see old posts remain open for reading purposes but locked for replies after a reasonable period of no replies, say 6 to 12 months.

If he is still in HS, he should have no problem making the team based on size alone! LOL

Valid point, no need bringing up posts on a individual who has probably graduated college. Good eye Dale. Think something for administrator/moderator to give consideration to. Could even be purged. We have so many repeats on posts within thirty day periods as it is. On other hand could be a lot of maybe unnecessary work. Throw it against wall and see if it sticks.

  13. Allow me to share my experience. I devised a comprehensive approach for myself. First, I subjectively assessed my level, including analyzing my handicap. Then, based on this, I focused personally on driving, drivers, and long irons, which I regularly practiced and honed. It's crucial to consistently track progress by recording statistical data and session results. This helps identify areas for improvement and track development over time. Ideally, taking private lessons from professionals would be beneficial, although I didn't utilize this myself. However, I did simulate tryout conditions during my training sessions. From my perspective, I recommend conducting practice rounds under competition with friends or setting specific scoring goals for yourself. And most importantly, don't forget about physical conditioning. This will increase your chances of making the high school golf team and successfully passing tryouts. Wishing you success!
