Playing a round at Pinehurst #1 with another TT member close to me in age (both in our 60's), we came upon the observation that par 4's up to 400 yards were in our range. 4 years ago I considered 360 to be my upper limit. We were using different equipment (TS2/TS3, AVX/X, AP3/T-MB) but getting to the same goal. Some of it is strengthening/flexibility, some getting fitted to better equipment (to TS drivers for sure), and getting the right ball for our game.

Are others able to see that fitness, swing analysis, and equipment fitting has made that kind of improvement in their game?

  2. I am in my early 60's also and I have gained alot better dispersion rate with my new TS3 driver and a few extra yards but my Titleist 718 AP3 irons seem to be a little inconsistant on my approach shots from 180 yards in and Im thinking that maybe I should have them fitted with swing analysis. My physical range of motion is pretty good to be in my 60's. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Properly fitted equipment has been the biggest contributor, along with lessons a close second. My swing may still have a myriad of flaws, but instruction taught me how to think on a golf course and probably saves me at least 5 strokes per round, instead of hammering away and making a bad situation worse, I try to minimize it as much as possible.

Triples and quads are far less frequent, but still present.

Congrats on the increase Don. I too am seeing the benefit of a fitness program that has helped immensely. Adding the AVX ball definitely helped and as the budget allows, a TS driver is a must have. Good golfing to you. Fairways and greens!

I found that working with an instructor has helped me the most. At 72 he has worked with me on tempo, therefore generating more power and a bit more distance in all my clubs, along with accuracy. Always getting fitted for any new club by a qualified Titleist fitter, helps.

I've always been a bit of a big hitter. However after a couple years off and upgrading my driver/hitting the gym I'm consistently 25 yards longer
  7. Focused practice is always a good key. Small steps lead to big gains.

This is interesting to read everyones experiences. I like to think its a little bit of everything adding up. An inch gained in fitness, plus an edge gained with proper equipment mixed in with the right technique can all be incremental gains. Add them up over time and you get a big gain! As golfers, we all know that the only way to truly improve is to find it in the dirt!
  9. I change driver almost every year later even 2 times a year. I was one of those that once believe driver is End all be all. Recently I realize its the wedges that allows me to score. i now carry a 50, 56, 60 and 64. Practice at least 6 hours a week on pitching and putting.

You know the saying, drive for show, putt for dough.......the thing most people work on the least or at what I see at the driving ranges.....short game inside 100 yards (which includes putting)......in watching people warm up in the morning, they pull out the driver first a start pounding away......just sayin' from first observations
  11. I agreed with Keith. Properly fitted equipment is key. From there, it is practicing with a purpose, not just "beating balls".
  12. I agree with everyone in regards to the fitting of clubs, instruction and physical fitness. All of them contribute to the total outcome we are all searching for. I personally have found that I tend to get in bad habits if I do not see a professional swing instructor regularly. I have more time for practicing as I have gotten older. I have tested at least one club from every brand. I wouldn't trade my Titleist equipment for all of the other brands put together. This is definitely a benefit for such a humbling sport!

Good equipment, Constant practice on the game whether it be mental side or physical side such as swing improvements and improved flexibility, speed, and strength. Its a battle as you age and the gains are tough to achieve as the body ages. I'm 62 and week to week I notice differences. Passion and a love for the game are the key to staying on it. I pray that I have a few more years to enjoy the game and hope to make my first elusive hole in one!
