Yesterday was a beautiful day in New England. Myself and a co-worker left work early and played 18 at a course called Hickory Hill in Methuen, MA. Working on a swing change the front 9 was tough, back 9 was better. Either way we both had a blast... At the end, did our hand shake and off we went.. Driving home i was in the mood to play more so I hit up my local favorite course, Portsmouth C.C. Pulled in the parking lot and it was almost empty, couldn't believe it. It was around 5 p.m. and considering it was a beautiful day it would be a little more packed but nope I was wrong...

Checked in the pro shop and asked to go off the back if possible, sure no problem. Teeing off 10 I looked around. No one on 9 and no one on the 10th green. Just me and 2 ProV1s.. I figured I have some fun so played from the tips although it wasn't much fun when facing the wind.. But I have tell you I had a blast playing solo with NO ONE around the whole time. I did not see one soul the whole time I played the back 9... I took my time and enjoyed every shot I played. And the scenery, it just doesn't get any better at Portsmouth C.C.

Trying to find a sport where you can play solo AND enjoy the scenery at the same time? I honestly can't think of any.... Love golf....

Not sure if I'll have that opportunity again but it would be nice... Anyone ever have the chance to play solo with no one around? What a treat...

Here are a few pics since i had PLENTY of time to snap a few...

    Cheers to you all!

I absolutely love the solitude of playing a round by myself. The great part is that you can move at a good pace and get into a great rhythm. It's also a great time to practice shots on the course that you might not otherwise try to play during a "normal" round.
  3. Barry, I agree with your points!

    ChrisH,

Wow! Almost like being in heaven. I'm going have to drive up there so time from Virginia to see what I am missing. Most courses here are jammed with golfers. Like Barry stated this is a great time to work on your game. Whenever I am out of town and find a course like yours that's being litely used I will practice by playing 2 balls for every shot (like in a Captain's choice scramble). I'll pick up the best shot and always play the worst ball and another one that I drop. Doing this keeps me focused so I am always trying to hit premium shots to my target. Another form of practice I'll try is I will not keep score for my round and focus on hitting multiple practice shots whenever I come up against a particularly difficult shot. It could be a fairway bunker, or a chip shots, or fast down hill putt, etc.... This gives me an opportunity to practice shots I don't normally see at my home practice facility which is very flat with no short game area to speak of.

Anyway Chris, your course looks awesome and the weather must be finally changing up there so you can get out and enjoy it more often. Pictures look great!

    Best Wishes,

Hey Christopher H. Since I work at a G.C. it is easy, when I get out on time, to play alone. I just find an open hole and start. It is usually around 3:30 - 4:00 when I get out. Usually play two balls. The best part is, its free! I'm there when the sun comes up, and love being there when the sun goes down. Gota say, I love my job.

I love to play alone. I tend to play fast and I will finish 18 holes in2 1/2 - 3 hrs. It's just me and the course. unfortunately, I shoot some of my best rounds alone and then there is nobody to witness them...

I agree- I love having the course to myself walking and having the headphones on. I live real close to my home course, during the fall and when my wife use to coach volleyball. I would leave work alittle early park and walk thru the path to the 10th tee. I would usually play 10-13 then come back in play 6-9 and if no one out there I could play that in 1.5 hrs or less. It was the best went the leaves started to change colors.

I play almost daily, tee off at 7am as a solo. Some days I'll practice shots from a certain yardage to the green. Some days I'll practice 15 foot putts. Some days I'll place my ball about 10 steps off the green and do bump and runs. By 9am my senior buddies show up and I'll play with them but that solo 9 is usually where I have my most fun.

It looks like you were not entirely alone, I think I saw Yoda in some of the pictures. Serously, I enjoy a round by myself when I have a chance, usually late in the afternoon and walking. It's great just to relax, enjoy the solitude and enjoy the game.

I agree... I love solo rounds. I don't know if I've ever had a round where I didn't see a soul... but played solo YES! It's so easy to be in the zone with no interruptions, just a constant stream of focus, and a rhythm of playing shot-after-shot.
  11. I love playing alone only drawback is can't use it towards handicap but there is just something about the peace and quiet of being alone on a course that I love

I share the views of playing by yourself. I try to do this every so often. I find playing alone with a good pace, I can really practice shots in certain situations that is hard to do when you are playing as part of a foursome. I often hit my best scores when playing by myself. Too bad I can't post them, but the practice and pleasure of it is reward enough.

I play 50% of my golf by myself. Mainly because when I play, no matter when I get to the course, I play until the sun goes down. I am the last person to leave. I love playing 36, 45, 54, 63 holes a day. I find that playing by myself are the times I can really focus and work on things I need to. Which is why I completely disagree with the USGA rule of not counting your scores of playing by yourself for a handicap. By the way, playing by yourself is the most difficult as you can't see 3 other people's putts when on the green. Anyway, golf is mostly a singular, solitary game when practicing. Why should it be any different when playing? I prefer the solitude at the end of the day playing golf. There is no better therapy in the world.

Not only a mild winter to keep playing here on Cape Cod, but the spring has been 'intermediate' and solo play has been plentiful with lots of wildlife and many sunsets at Falmouth CC. Yes, a treat to enjoy.

With all the different ways that we are connected/linked today, solo rounds = tranquility. When I was back in New England I had more opportunities to do that, now here in ATL it's harder to get out on a solo round.

Good for you Chris!! Also love the Yoda head cover.

The solo round is a great thing! Since my schedule is all over the place, I often find myself playing solo. It's nice to work on swing techniques, or simply play a quick round. It's amazing to just enjoy the walk, scenery, and the game. Great pictures too!

It's rare nowadays, but I love playing as a solo. Gives me a chance to work on things that just don't materialize on the range. Years ago I use to play a coarse that was in beautiful shape, but off the beaten patch. I could usually go out as a single and I loves every minute of it.

Great photos- thank you for sharing them with your experience. Yeah, It's really nice to be able to play alone. I've dome it more often before than now and I've gone out as early as just enough to see the ball before the sunrise.

When I travel for work I will play a round alone quite frequently. It is a great way to practice a few real round situations and more importantly clear my head from the days sales calls.

Also, great pictures of the course.
