Hi everyone, new TT member here but a once avid Titleist golfer. Basically gave the game up about 11-12 years ago. I was a 7 handicap in my prime playing/caddying days, but I've played exactly 4 rounds since 2010. I'm 36 now and my wife and I welcomed our first child into the world back in October. I really want to introduce him to the game and figured now is as good a time as any to get back into it myself.

Wasn't sure how to go about it, and didn't want to drop a ton of money only to get frustrated and discouraged, so I tried as best I could to rebuild my bag from 2005 when I was really playing well via eBay. Here's my current WITB setup:

    983E 8.5 Speeder S-Flex 980 15 degree 3 wood Titleist 4375 S-Flex 980 17 degree 5 wood Aldilla S-Flex 735 CM's 3-PW Steel True Temper 54 degree Vokey 260*12 60 degree Vokey 260*12 Odyssey 2-ball putter Titleist Players 4 USA stand bag (the only thing I insisted on buying new)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone on here went through as long of a layoff from the game as I did, and if so, I'd love to hear any advice you have about regaining your confidence and getting to a point where you felt ready to play 18 again. I'm lucky enough to have 2 driving ranges w/practice facilities near me that are open at night, so I'm using this time now to really try and get some consistency back in my swing.

Really looking forward to learning a lot from this forum, the information on here has been awesome from what I've seen already. Hit 'em straight, everyone!

The biggest change in golf is happening right now on the course: no rakes, no touching the flagstick, no drinking water on course, one person per cart, and whatever local rules apply. This Covid golf is a different animal...not bad, not good, just different.
Welcome back to this great game and don't rush it. Hit the range a few times and practice that short game!

Welcome back! I have not experienced a gap nearly that long but I do know golfers with good fundamentals recover pretty quickly. Something to be said for that quote, "like riding a bike". Might fall down a few times and get off to a wobbly start but guessing the feel will come back quicker than you expect. Couldn't be a better reason to progress than the opportunity to pass it onto the next generation. Keep us posted on your progress. Hit'm straight and stay safe!
  5. Welcome back! I stopped playing in 2009 and took the game up again in 2019. I was a 16 when I stopped and a 30+ when I started up again. I’m now a 27. At 64 it can be frustrating how much distance I’ve lost, but I’m coming down.

    Welcome back Kevin.

I went from playing or practicing almost everyday to twenty-five some years later to not playing more than a couple rounds of business golf a year at most. As Dale said, "just like riding a bike".... For me, it was a process of getting healthy and gym workouts three times a week for a year. One miniscus surgery later and here I am ready to go.

It is a process so be patient. Don't over do it (miniscus) and be accepting if it takes you a while to get that 7 handicap back.

    Glad you made it back!

Not that long. Have been off for seven months. Had back surgery and yesterday was my first day back on the course. Have been doing the driving range thing for about three weeks between the rain storms. Actually shot the same score I shot on this course on 11/11/2019. Before I started getting all the injections and I could barely walk a short distance due to the pain in my left side. Trying to get out of sixth gear and maybe down to third gear.
The tempo is not very good right now. Welcome back and know you will find a new love for the game. Looking forward to see how the progress goes. Oh, welcome to TT and to the new addition to the family. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Cheers......

Thanks Chuck, glad to see you're doing better now. I have some friends down in Mt. Pleasant, and we try to make an IOP/Charleston trip as often as we can. Gonna have to play Wild Dunes one of these days!
  12. I was an avid golfer from 2006-2010 and got down to a 10 handicap. Then I played only a couple times per year from 2010 until 2018. By 2018 I might has well have been completely starting over. I had a huge slice on everything and absolutely no short game. I had a strong 2018 and 2019 and have mostly corrected my slice and improved every aspect of my game. I feel like I'm playing my best golf, but unfortunately my scores are not reflecting that. Just need to learn to put the shots together again. Unfortunately I've only played once in 2020 (and a couple times at the range) but I'm hoping to get back into the grove again shortly! Covid has really hurt my golf game
  13. I'm in a similar boat, I stopped playing around 2000 didn't play again until 2006 but only maybe 4 or 5 rounds that year then a massive break till 2018.

In 2018 my wife decided she wanted to learn how to play and I thought sure I'll tag along for a round or two & maybe help her along, well after that long of a break it was just two beginners learning how to play. I had to put away my 735 CM's for AP2's and later some 919 Forged irons. By 2020 the AP2's had found their was back into the bag, as I had started to see 70's again and while the 919's are awesome the AP's had more flight control for my liking.

2020 was a really tough year to get in the golf I had hoped and I wasn't able to really play as I wanted, my handicap climbed and I had to painfully play through some 100's and the 919's returned. This year things have started to settle down and my wife are enjoying the game again. The 919's have been kicked out of the bag again but this time it's to my old friends the 735 CM's and my scores continue to drop as now I almost have my old swing back. Now when I look down I'm seeing a thin top line and I know I'm in full control, sure I have a stinger or two in a round but it only makes me focus harder and my scores are moving back down the low 80's and 70's again.

All and all it's been incredibly frustrating knowing that I once was a sub par on most days golfer to only be a newborn beginner again, infact the frustration was really intense for the first year. The first years I couldn't hit my driver off a tee box at all and had to stick to my 4i as there's no 3i in the 919 Forged, but that passed after almost 2 yrs back.

Now days I go out and play with the course Pro and he and I see who can drive the par 4's, the other day he told me about a shot he had and that I should try for but I hit it a bit to long and ended up in the water on the other side of the green. Where I'm going with this is I'm now on my 4th year back and my game has improved to finally be risk/reward again but it was a long road to get here and I'm still working on getting back to where I left off.

The biggest skill I have learned is patience as it's a long road back but it has some incredible sunsets along the way.

I hope your journey is a fun one and that you can see the joy of the game again even when the scores might not be what you once had.

I went through a lengthy period of not getting playing. I have a couple of suggestions. First, get up at the crack for dawn at your local muni and play 9 holes. If you can practice during your lunch hour practice your short game. When you tell your game come around play a full 18. I think the key thing is to balance your time with your newborn with getting a send to playing again. When my girls were little and I had babysitting duty, I’d play vhs tapes (this was the 80’s)’ of old Masters and Open tournaments. We’d play roll the golf ball. Name that colour etc. Just a thought.
  15. Kevin,

Welcome back. For me it was about a 4 year layoff when I went to college. I was on the golf team for 3 years in high school, but didn't really meet anyone who played and money was a bit tight to say the least. After playing sporadically for many years, in the last few years I am finally playing again on a regular basis.

I am sure you will find you game again, especially with the practice facilities you have around you. Great gift to give your son, I am working on getting my 3 grandsons interested now hitting into the net at home. Good luck, fairways and greens!
