  1. Hey, TT! Traveling to RVA on Memorial Day weekend to visit a friend. Looking for the best public courses in and around the city. It’s almost that time to tee it up in Ohio! Cheers.

The courses in Williamsburg are pretty nice, not sure how far you want to drive for the tee times

    Here are a few recommendations:

    1) Independence Golf Club: just outside downtown, was supposed to co-host the 2020 USGA Mid Am but was cancelled due to COVID
    2) Hunting Hawk: just outside downtown
    3) Royal New Kent: a short drive east of Richmond
    4) Spring Creek: a short drive to the west, easily one of the best courses in Virginia if not the best public course in VA

Hope this helps, I grew up in Charlottesville which is about 1.5 hours from Richmond but have played a fair amount of golf near Richmond. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

I agree with all of these recommendations. From personal experience, I’ve found Independence to be a tremendous experience both on and off the course.

I would also highly recommend Belmont. A Tillinghast design has been taken over by the First Tee and renovated by DLIII. It has a great par three courses and a tremendous 12 hole championship course that hosted that 1949 PGA Championship. The 12 hole concept sounds weird at first, but it really works. It’s really worth reading about the history. golfweek.usatoday.com/.../
