  1. My recommendation would be Mid Pines.
  2. Why not just go across the street from Pine Nnedles, and play Mid Pines. They also own Southern Pines Golf Club.

Pinehurst #2 is tight, but the other courses are less crowded. #4 would be my choice after #2.

Agree that Pinehurst #4 would be a place to play and less crowded.

Southern Pines Golf Club reopened last fall after a renovation. One of Donald Ross' first designs.

I would look at Southern pines or #4 at Pinehurst

I've played Sothern Pines pre-reno and it was fun then but not in great shape. I've read now that the course, while still growing in, is fabulous. The clubhouse not so much but it is all a work-in-progress.

I also recommend #4 at Pinehurst if you can get on. I did a group trip at the Pinehurst resort in February and we played #2, #8, #1 and #4. #4 was my favorite course.

I liked Pinehurst so much I am moving there later this year!

#1 is nice if you want something less difficult. It has some holes that go by the horse track which is neat. I am a member at Pinehurst now that I live here and I like all of the courses. They are each different in some way.

I played Tobacco Road a month ago. I thought it was a beautiful but intensely difficult. I played with my son from the tips. Many holes you are unable to see the fairway from the tee as designed by the architect. It kinda threw me off and I pride myself on taking on tough courses. Did I say it was tough! Eve. The guys in the shop that took our green fees said their preference was to play elsewhere. After you play please write up your experience.
  13. Mid Pines or Talamore, which is just down the street.
  14. Going with a group first go Oct. you can play 1,3,5 without staying on Pinehurst property, 5 being the best of that group. Would also recommend playing Carolina Trace. We are also going to play the Cradle short course and the putting course which are both a blast with a group of your buddies.

I haven't played 1 yet, but I enjoyed #3 way more than #5, even with its shorter length. Those green complexes will eat you up and spit you out.

Mid Pines, Southern Pines GC, Talamore, Pinehurst #2, Pinehurst #4.
Also, play the Cradle. The nine hole course at Pinehurst Resort. It is a lot of fun and challenging. A nice way to wrap up the day before dinner.

Don't forget about Mid South Club.

Just curious how this trip went. My buddy is planning a trip to Pinehurst next November, and while playing at Pinehurst, is looking at other courses within the area to add to play.

From my understanding pinehurst is unable to be played unless you are staying at the resort. I think you can book 24 hours in advance if you aren’t staying at the resort but I imagine it would be tough to get a tee time for you and a couple buddies 24 hours in advance. Southern pines is great…they just played the women’s US open there. Would recommend there. If not stay a night at pinehurst and play No. 2. It was perfect and amazing. Heading back down there in July.
  21. We go to Pinehurst every fall and you have a lot of great recommendations. One other suggestion would be to play Pinehurst #3 in the afternoon (which is shorter than the other courses) and then play the Cradle after the round. We did this lats year and it was blast.
