I've used vinegar to take the jet black finish off the SM7 so it will rust, and after doing so there's a rectangular section about 1" long and 0.5" wide in the dead center of the sole that looks like steel was added and buffed before the finish was applied. Anyone have any idea what this really is?

It's metal for sure, and completely smooth. Not the remnants of a sticker or anything like that, best I can fathom.

  2. Hunter,

I am for sure no expert in these things, but it looks like some kind of sticker. I know that you said it wasn't a sticker but could it be the residue from the tape that fitters use to check the lie angle in relations to your swing? Did you buy it new? Did you buy it off of the rack where someone else could have tried it and their fitter/salesman took the tape off after they were done? I would be highly surprised if the Titleist people put extra metal on the sole after the club was built. Keep us informed.

Thanks Mark - FYI this was ordered directly from titleist, so I did not use a lie board or anything like that. I think the last reply about the fillet makes the most sense.

If I get mad enough at the results I might cut it in half to see if there's any more to the story, but so far I only have my swing to blame, not the clubs!

Looks like a different type of metal. Could be for added weight. It looks like it is positioned mid point to toe area.

  7. looks like where the fillet (metal was pored into the casing )and then ground off the fillet.
