OK, a little geography lesson here. The word "British" does not mean just England. The British Isles comprise the entire UK and those that hail from the UK are considered to be British (You can look it up) although most , I'm sure will refer to themselves by country. Be that as it may, I will continue to say British Open.
  5. I have called it "British Open" for 25+ years. I have tried really hard the last few years to refer to it as "The Open". My 11 year old calls it "The Open" so I guess eventually everyone will stop calling it "British Open". I will be honest week of I call the US Open "The Open" (ex. "Who's leading the open"). Either way I get to watch golf at 6am before work so it's great no matter what you call it!

Yesterday's telecast on Golf Channel started the great debate once again. I have always said The British Open. OK Team Titleist, what's your preference?

To "me" I always thought of it as "The British Open". But only this year, is when it struck or stuck to me as "The Open". Now I like the "The Open", but when I do refer to it as The Open I then have to say "The British Open" right after 99% of the time because it seems most people I talk to still think of "The Open" as "The US Open", not the "British Open".

Wait, they are calling it The Women’s British Open this weekend. Why aren’t they calling it the Women’s Open? Seems like they would be consistent, right?

So much for consistency, because they have been saying Women's British Open since that tournament began.

Since the tournaments inception the Womens' event was called the Wheetibix Women's British Open. With the sponsor change it then became the Ricoh Women's British Open.

The men's event has always been called The Open Championship or The Open for short.

These names have been consistent for as long as these two events have been played.

The Open for me. I went to my 1st one in 1989. I was born in Ayrshire surrounded by Troon, Prestwick, St Nicholas, Turnberry etc. Every one I know calls it " The Open" always have, always will. With the word "The" signifying the one and only, or the Original. No one needs to ask which one. The only is one Open. My Gran even worked at Prestwick Old course in the 70's, shes now 83 and still calls it the Open : )

Saw an old newsreel from years ago, 1930 when Bobby Jones won and 1953 when Ben Hogan won and both times as they were being handed the Claret Jug the announcer said "The British Open".
  12. Well I may prefer, as an American to call it The British Open however, it is a Tournament played in Britain. That means it doesn't matter what I prefer. It's their Tournament therefor they decide what it's called. We Americans don't even get a vote!
